  2. Bar position: For high-bar squats (the standard recommendation for most beginners), position the bar across your upper trapezius β€” on the muscular shelf created by your traps. The bar should rest on muscle, not on the bony protrusions of your cervical spine. Wrap your hands around the bar slightly wider than shoulder-width to create a stable shelf.
